Senior Russian officer arrested on corruption charges - World News

MOSCOW, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- A senior Russian officer was arrested on Friday on corruption and other charges, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The deputy commander of Russia's railway troops, Lt. Gen. Yevgeny Kornishin, was arrested in Moscow on embezzlement and abuse of office charges, RIA cited investigator.

"Kornishin is accused of embezzling through fraudulent action and abuse of office funds and a two-room apartment to a value of more than 5 million rubles (about 194,000 U.S. dollars)," Investigation Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said.

Kornishin, who is also the railway troops' chief engineer, is also accused of illegally purchasing and storing ammunition, RIA said.
